What IS BEST TO Wear for an Iceland Elopement: The 2026 Survival & Style Guide

Planning an Iceland elopement or intimate wedding comes with a lot of excitement — and a lot of questions. One of the most common ones I hear is what to wear for an Iceland elopement with its unpredictable weather. I believe that having the right elopement clothes can make or break your entire day. The right outfits will keep you comfortable, help you move freely, and photograph beautifully against Iceland’s dramatic landscapes.
This guide is written specifically for couples planning elopement photos in Iceland or a small destination wedding.

Iceland elopement essentials to stay warm

Iceland’s weather can change quickly, even in summer. Wind, rain, and cold temperatures are all common, especially at waterfalls, glaciers, and black sand beaches and in the evenings or early mornings when the light is the prettiest for photography.

For your Iceland wedding or elopement, consider bringing:

  • Thermal layers under dresses or suits
  • Beige or nude warm tights or leggings for the bride and thermals for the groom
  • Wool socks
  • Heat warmers or even better – adhesive body warmers (I usually bring mine just in case but you are welcome to bring your own if you want, the more the merrier!)

When you’re comfortable, your elopement photos feel relaxed and natural and you can focus on enjoying the present moment instead of suffering through it and constantly thinking about the cold.

What is a perfect dress to wear for an Iceland elopement?

Flowy wedding dresses photograph beautifully in Iceland’s wind and open landscapes. Lightweight fabrics allow movement and create a soft, romantic feel.

Best choices for Iceland elopement dresses:

  • Flowy skirts
  • Long sleeves or removable sleeves
  • Simple silhouettes that are easy to move in, like an A-line silhouette for example

Avoid very heavy or very tight dresses that restrict movement and limit the variety of activities you can do in them (mermaid dress is not for Iceland for sure). As for possible fabric options, it can be tulle, crepe, chiffon, silk, organza, lace, satin. They are all pretty lightweight and will have a lot of movement and texture.

Another thing to look out for are dresses with slits. I personally always advise against them because they usually prevent you from wearing warm leggings/thermals underneath which are essential for Icelandic weather (even in July!).

What is the best suit for an Iceland elopement?

Suits should be warm enough for outdoor locations and flexible enough for walking and light hiking.

Great options are:

  • Wool or tweed suits
  • Neutral tones like beige, brown, grey or navy, green
  • Layered looks with vests and knitwear (3 piece suits always look stylish and timeless)

One thing to keep in mind (that actually happened to me recently) is to make sure that your dress jacket has a real pocket, not a false one.

A groom that I was taking photos of the other day did not know that he actually didn’t have a real pocket on his jacket and they bought a pocket boutonniere which was not possible to attach. Unlike a traditional boutonniere that is pinned, this version is built onto a flat card that slides directly into the breast pocket, just like a pocket square. It usually is more convenient to deal with as you don’t need to pin and it is more secure (especially in windy conditions).

Best Outer Layers for an Iceland Elopement

Outerwear is essential for Iceland elopement photography, and it can add character to your images. These layers help you stay warm while looking your best.
Popular options:

  • Wool coats
  • Neutral rain coats
  • Capes or cloaks
  • Faux fur or textured wraps
  • White or beige wool blankets
  • Icelandic wool sweaters (or lopapeysa as they are called in Icelandic). These sweaters are not only incredibly photogenic but also warm and “Iceland proof” – they are moisture wicking in a way synthetic sweaters aren’t. I recommend buying similar patterns but different colours that go well together, either in Álafoss stores or in Handknitting Association stores in Reykjavik. If you can’t find the one you like there is also an option to order a custom one with a local who will hand knit it for you! I provide all the contacts and recommendations to my couples during the planning stages.

Footwear: Why Hiking Boots are the Best Iceland Elopement Shoes

Shoes are one of the most important choices for elopement photos in Iceland. They should be comfortable (make sure you buy them way in advance and have time to break them in), have a good grip, preferably waterproof and look stylish. Some of the brands I usually recommend are Danner, Dr. Martens, Red Wing or Thursday Boots.

Recommended:

  • Hiking boots
  • Waterproof leather boots
  • Shoes with good grip

A lot of brides-to-be ask me if they should bring their heels to Iceland and my answer is always a resounding NO. It is extremely uncomfortable (and quite dangerous to be honest!) to wear heels on Icelandic terrain like rough lava rock, sand, mud and so on. Many couples wear boots for walking and switch briefly for photos when conditions allow but what is even better is to choose hiking boots that are photogenic and suit well your whole wedding outfit, something out of leather for example always looks timeless. Another option for brides are wearing white boots, they work well with most wedding dresses and look pretty cool in photos.

If your location has the potential to be snowy or icy (like a winter elopement next to a waterfall), get a pair of traction spikes that fit over your shoes to make sure you won’t slip or fall.

Colors that photograph best in Iceland

Iceland’s landscapes are often dark, moody, and dramatic. Clothing that complements these tones photographs best.

Great color choices:

  • Ivory, cream, beige
  • Earth tones
  • Soft pastels
  • Muted greens and blues

Avoid bright neon colors and bold logos or patterns that distract from the landscape.

Best hair and makeup for Iceland wedding photos

Wind and rain are part of the experience — and part of what makes Iceland elopement photos so unique.

Tips:

  • Natural hairstyles hold up better but think about fixing at least some parts of your hair (or all of it) in place for windy conditions so it doesn’t go all over your face, especially if it’s long or very fine. Braids are always a great choice.
  • Use hairspray to help you keep your flyaways at bay
  • Waterproof makeup is essential

Accessories that add warmth and variety

Accessories are practical and photograph beautifully in Iceland wedding photography. They add not only warmth but also texture and allow variety without changing outfits.

  • Wool scarves
  • Gloves
  • Cloaks, wraps or ponchos (wool blankets cal also look very stylish). This Reynisfjara photoshoot features a perfect example of a great winter cape.
  • A veil (doesn’t really keep you warm but can definitely add to the variety and can create some very interesting images)
  • Clear umbrellas (no worries, I always keep a couple in my car in case of rain)

I usually recommend working with a professional hair and make up artists as they know all the nuances of how to make your hair and make up stay on you all day in Iceland even in the craziest conditions (once you book your elopement adventure with me I provide a list of trusted vendorsI work with).

QUESTIONS

I usually recommend wearing shoes with good grip and that are going to be waterproof and comfortable to walk in. So my typical answer is no.

Up in the Icelandic Highlands, hiking boots are a status symbol of adventure. High-end leather boots (like Danner or Dr. Martens) look timeless and ruggedly stylish.

A veil is one of the best “props” for Iceland, but it requires a strategy. Do not use a short, stiff veil; it will just stand straight up. A cathedral-length veil made of soft silk tulle will flow behind you beautifully. Pro Tip: We don’t just “pin” it; I recommend a small hair comb and having your partner ready to hold the mid-section during high-wind treks to prevent it from acting like a sail.

In most of cases, I almost always recommend hiking in your dress rather than changing on-site. When deciding what to wear for an Iceland elopement, you have to account for the relentless wind and lack of shelter. – changing in these conditions can be problematic Instead, we “bundle” your dress (lifting it off the ground) and wear a long, waterproof parka and thermal leggings over it. This keeps your core temperature steady. The only exception is a very long, technical hike.

On its own, no. The wind will cut right through a standard weave. I typically recommend getting thicker suits out of thick wool or tweed. You will also feel much better with a 200 GSM Merino wool base layer (top and bottom) tucked into the suit. I also highly recommend a waistcoat (vest); it provides a double layer of insulation for your core while allowing you to take your jacket off for a few “relaxed” shots without freezing.

If you are eloping at Skógafoss or Kvernufoss, you will most likely encounter heavy mist regardless of the weather. When planning what to wear for an Iceland elopement, I recommend high-end waterproof makeup and a “relaxed” hairstyle — think loose braids or textured waves—rather than a tight, sleek updo. Sleek styles tend to frizz or fall flat in the humidity, whereas a “boho” or rugged style actually looks better as it gets slightly damp and wind-blown. As for your attire, we keep your waterproof shell on until the very moment we start shooting to keep your dress or suit as dry as possible for the ceremony.
