Viking-style elopement in Iceland

One of the most unique photoshoots I’ve done in Iceland was capturing Ásatrú pagan wedding ceremony that celebrates the union of two souls in the heart of Iceland's breathtaking landscapes. Ásatrú is a modern form of Norse paganism that focuses on the connection with nature, Norse mythology, and heathenry. It is a spiritual path that values the natural world, the ancestors, and the community. The Asatru wedding ceremony in Iceland is a celebration of this spiritual connection, offering a unique alternative to traditional religious ceremonies.

An Asatru wedding ceremony in Iceland is conducted under the sky, with the exception of caves, which provide a unique and intimate setting. The ceremony is led by a Goði, an appointed priestess or priest who has been trained in the Asatru tradition. The Goði begins the ceremony with opening words, drawn from the old Icelandic Sagas and the Edda poems, to bless the time and the sacred place of the ceremony.

The heart of the ceremony revolves around the oaths, personal vows exchanged between the bride and groom. These oaths are spoken while holding an oath ring, traditionally made of copper, symbolizing the eternal bond between the couple.

The Goði, the bride, and the groom hold the oath ring as they recite their vows, emphasizing the commitment and love they share.

After the oaths, the Goði gives the oath ring to the couple, who then exchange it, followed by a few more words of blessing. The ceremony concludes with the Goði drinking from a horn, followed by the bride and groom, symbolizing their union and the sharing of their love with the earth. Guests are also invited to drink from the horn, toasting the couple's well-being and happiness.

An Asatru Pagan wedding ceremony in Iceland is a unique and powerful way to celebrate the union of two souls. It offers a deep connection to the natural world, the rich history of Norse mythology, and the community of heathens. If you value authenticity, spirituality, and the beauty of Iceland, and feel like traditional wedding ceremonies do not resonate with you that much, an Asatru wedding might be your best way to create a very special memory that will last a lifetime!
