THE MOST UNFORGETTABLE Múlagljufur elopement adventure

KIND WORDS

“Chris created and captured a fairytale elopement for us and our photos are so beautiful and timeless!!”

“We booked flights to Iceland 2 weeks before our arrival (aka chaotic mess) and Chris made our special day so easy and fun! We stopped at multiple stunning locations before hiking into a canyon for our vow exchange in the midnight daylight – EPIC! She gave us location options, mapped out our route, made sure we remembered to pay for parking and bring snacks for a long adventurous day.. literally our planner, photographer, videography, tour guide, maid of honor, best man, new friend, ALL OF IT!

We are so impressed with our photos and all of our family members and friends just gasp when they see them. Chris directed us so well and we felt super comfortable with her and we’re not people who spend time in front of cameras. We’ve looked at the photos and video a zillion times and we’re still just as obsessed with them! Our special day was more than we could’ve ever imagined it to be. We wanted an adventurous, stress-free day with some hiking and vows – Chris blew our minds as to what that could look like and we’ll cherish our photos and video forever.”

– KELSEY AND BEN

Midnight sun magic

This Múlagljufur elopement took place on July 1, 2024 on the South coast of Iceland and it will stay in my heart and memory forever. Not because the weather conditions, timing and lighting were as perfect as it gets but because I witnessed something truly magical that evening and first and foremost made lifelong friends.

It was a still and overcast summer afternoon when I met Kelsey and Ben for the first time in real life at the parking lot of Kvernufoss waterfall. We had met each other virtually before when we had our video call so it felt like we had been friends already for a long time. They were a bit nervous to start their big day but very excited and eager to explore our first location.

Kvernufoss waterfall is perfect for elopement shoots as it feels more intimate and less crowded than its neighbour Skógafoss. One of the most unique viewpoints there is standing directly behind the waterfall and the best part is that you don’t get wet there! The gorge is as stunning as the waterfall itself, it’s lush green hills with birds flying around looked like a movie scene and we couldn’t stop admiring it.

For the second spot Kelsey and Ben chose the iconic Reynisfjara black sand beach with it’s famous basalt columns, towering sea stacks and long stretches of finest volcanic sand. The sky remained heavy with thick grey clouds, adding an almost cinematic drama to the scene.

As I knelt down to photograph their wedding rings on the black sand, I asked them to watch the waves. Focused on the shot, I didn’t notice the water slowly moving closer — until a large wave suddenly rushed in. For a moment, it looked like the ocean might take something irreplaceable. Ben reacted instantly, jumping forward to grab the wedding rings and Kelsey’s engagement ring, a special heirloom from her grandmother.

Seconds later, the wave crashed over the spot where they had been standing. We quickly ran up the beach, out of breath and laughing in shock at how close we came to losing them.

Our next stop was the Yoda Cave, a short photo stop where we were hoping to see beautiful blooming lupines. As the sun began to set, warm light broke through the clouds and slowly changed the scene, making everything feel soft and almost surreal. We picked a pretty spot where I suggested Ben and Kelsey walk away from me holding hands — eventually these photos turned out to be one of my favourite I’ve ever taken. They both looked like they were in some fairy tale.

After capturing these moments, we headed toward Múlagljúfur Canyon — the most meaningful place of the day, where they would exchange their vows. Just before midnight, during the golden light of Iceland’s midnight sun, we started our hike that took about an hour. I was their only guest and witness, and I felt honored and privileged to share such an important moment of their lives.

When we arrived to the top we realised that there wasn’t a single person up there, only birds flying inside the canyon. The heavy clouds that were following us the whole day somehow disappeared and the air was as still as it can get – it felt like the greatest gift we could receive that night Iceland could give us. Surrounded by tall cliffs and a distant waterfall in the valley below, they read their vows. As the night turned into early morning, they celebrated with champagne and wedding cake at the cliff’s edge, ending their elopement in the most unforgettable way.
