HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO GET MARRIED IN ICELAND IN 2026? A Complete Budget Breakdown+Useful Tips From a Local Photographer

A lot of couples ask me the same burning question: how much does it cost to get married in Iceland? It is usually hard to answer in one sentence, as it depends a lot on the kind of experience you want to have and the level of comfort or luxury you are going for.

It’s no secret that Iceland is not really a “budget” destination, but it can definitely be affordable (especially if you get some tips and tricks from a local like me!).

So, instead of just copying whatever other people say, I decided to do my own extended research and present you with a complete breakdown of all the costs so you will have an idea of what you budget could look like.

Let’s get right into it!

Average Budget for Your Iceland Elopement

In 2026, a realistic budget for an Iceland elopement combined with a honeymoon trip including flights, rental car and accommodation for about 5-7 days during peak season typically falls between $9,000 and $20,000+ USD. This includes high-end photography, local vendors like HMUA, officiants and florists, luxury accommodation, and transport. While you can do it for less by staying fewer days, DIY-ing, or coming in the off-season months, most couples choose to invest in the $10k+ range for a seamless, stress-free experience that also allows them to do fun adventure activities on the wedding day or go to more remote locations (read more stunning view, fewer or no tourists at all).

A Complete Budget Breakdown (with my personal tips)

How Much Does a Ceremony Cost?

Private humanist or pagan officiant

  • To get officially married in Iceland you need a local licensed celebrant. If you are opting for a private officiant the standard ceremony fee is around $750 plus travel fee depending on your location ($1.65 per 1 km of driving), so if your ceremony is at one of the waterfalls on the South coast of Iceland for example, the total will be around $1200.
Keep in mind that if you intend to hike to your ceremony spot (for example a hike on a glacier), there is an additional hiking fee of $120 per hour. Here you can find humanist officiants and pagan chieftains available in Iceland.

Church wedding

  • If you are planning on getting married in a church, there will be a fee to rent it. The best Icelandic churches to get married in are the small and cute traditional countryside churches. One of my favourite churches to shoot in is the Black church in Búðir, to have a wedding ceremony in it for 1 h will cost you $380.

The Logistics (Travel & Stay) for 7 days

Flights

From North America for a direct flight per person: $550  – $700
From Europe: $300 – $500 (highly dependent on your home country)

Car rental (including insurance)

2WD:  $500 – $700
(4×4): $900 – $1,200
Camper van: $1200 – $2500 (depending on the size and the rental company)

Accommodation

A nice cabin (usually with a hot tub outside): $1300 – $2500+
Luxury cabins and cottages: from $3500 – $4000+
Boutique hotels: $3300+

Pro Tip: If you want to save some money on accommodation I recommend splurging on a nice cabin the night before and after your elopement and then either renting a camper van to have more freedom to explore or staying in smaller guesthouses (they are usually cheaper if you book on their website directly as they don’t have to pay any commission fee to accommodation booking websites).

How Much Do Wedding Vendors Cost?

While every vendor is different, here is what you should realistically budget for high-quality partners in Iceland this year. I always recommend booking these 6–9 months in advance as the best local artists get booked fast.

  • Photography & Planning Support: $2,500 – $7,000+ USD. Guess what, my recommendation is CHRIS RAY PHOTOS! I will be not only your photographer but also your scout, your timeline planner, your safety guide AND your best friend in Iceland who is always ready to help you with anything.
  • Hair & Makeup: $450 – $750 (expect to pay on the higher end if they travel to your remote cabin/hotel).
  • Florals (Bouquet & Boutonnière): $250 – $600
Pro Tip: get a pocket boutonnière to avoid pinning it to your jacket and possibly losing it. From my experience the pocket ones are built better for Icelandic conditions. Just make sure you have a real breast pocket, not a fake one. One of my favourite florists in Reykjavik that I recommend are Monika and Þórdís.
  • Videography: $3,000 – $6,000+
Professional videography requires a lot of expensive gear, skills and time. If you are interested in getting a high quality mini movie of your wedding day I recommend Kako Films.

Fun Activities (prices are for 2 people)

No adventure is complete without doing something memorable and fun that you enjoy doing together or trying some completely new experience! Some of them are free of course like hiking, having a picnic in a scenic spot or hot spring dipping while others require special equipment or certified guides. Here are some of my favourites that I would recommend:

  • Glacier hiking and exploring ice caves and blue crevasses – private guided tours from $490, including professional gear
  • Dog sledding (cart-ride when there is no snow) – private tour is $1,650 (3 h) in the North of Iceland and $1,200 near Reykjavik
  • Soaking in hot springs or geothermal baths – free in natural ones and around in $120 – $260 per person for baths and lagoons
  • Star gazing and watching Northern Lights – free (I can take you to some secret spots with the least amount of light pollution!)
  • Glacier lagoon kayaking – $300
  • Horse-riding – $300$400 for a private tour
  • Taking a heli-ride – $2,300$5,600 for 1 h tour to 2.5 3 h tour over the Highlands and up to $11,000 for the most epic 5 5.5 h tour over the glaciers, geothermal areas and rhyolite mountains
  • Bike tour – from $550
  • Zip-lining – from $200 (more if it´s a private tour)
  • ATV or Buggy safari – $370$570 (more for a private tour)
  • Private 4×4 tour to the Icelandic Highlands – the most breathtaking and otherworldly landscapes you will see! – $2,000

And the list goes on and on!

Iceland Summer Wedding vs Winter Wedding Cost

While most vendors’ prices remain consistent, the logistics of an Iceland elopement change with the seasons. Flights, hotels and car rental prices usually go down in the off-season which is November through end of March/April. Some activities and tours like ice cave exploration and horse riding tours sometimes also offer low season discounts.

Iceland Summer Elopements (May – September)

High Costs: Flights and accommodation are at their absolute peak. Expect to pay 20-30% more for a hotel room than you would in November or March, especially in touristy spots like Vik on the South coast of Iceland.

The Benefit: You have 24 hours of daylight, meaning we can shoot at 12:00 AM to avoid the tourists at any spot, even most poplar ones. Also, a lot of hidden gems with the most mind-blowing views become accessible like the Highlands for example or if you really feel adventurous we can do a short picturesque hike to your ceremony spot!

Iceland Winter Elopements (November -March)

Lower Costs: Accommodation is generally cheaper, and rental car companies offer “low season” rates.

The “Winter Tax”: You will likely need to have more buffer related to safety and gear. You’ll need a more rugged 4×4 for snow, professional glacier guides for a glacier or ice cave elopement, and more “Plan B” buffer money for possible weather-related delays. Although with the climate changes we have been having surprisingly mild and snowless winters lately.

The Benefit: More privacy at popular waterfalls, hot springs and the chance to see the Northern Lights and take some amazing star photos on your elopement day.

The 2026 “Price of a Dream”:
3 Mock Elopement Scenarios

To give you a better idea of what these numbers look like in practice, I’ve mapped out three common elopement styles.

WHERE TO

splurge

A local photographer who actually plans: in Iceland, your photographer is 50% artist and 50% survival guide. You aren’t just paying for photos, you’re paying for someone who knows how to find a backup waterfall when the weather is not cooperating, where to get the most authentic Icelandic sweater to keep you warm and build a timeline that avoids the tour buses and unnecessary stress. This is your most important investment.

In Iceland, the most famous and epic spots that are easily accessible are usually crowded. A private 4×4 isn’t just a car, it’s a key to a gate that most travellers can’t open. It allows us to cross rivers and climb ridges to reach ‘secret’ locations where the only witnesses to your vows are the mountains and Icelandic sheep.

On your elopement day, the last thing you want is have sleepless night because of a large tourist group in the hallway. A private luxury cabin gives you that intimate environment. You can blast your favourite music, cook your favourite meal together, relax in a hot tub after a full day of adventuring and truly inhabit the space. It’s not a room, it’s your home in Iceland.

WHERE TO

save

If you are bringing guests, keep the list under 10. Once you hit 15-20 people, you need a bus, a large venue, and complex catering. Keeping it intimate allows you to stay in a high-end boutique cabin instead of a generic hotel, saving you thousands in logistics.

While you want to look incredible, you don’t need a $10,000 gown that you’ll be afraid to get dirty. A mid-range, high-quality dress with proper thermal layers underneath will look just as cinematic. Spend that $5k you saved on a fun activity like a private 4×4 tour deep into Icelandic Highlands or a try something new you have never done before like glacier kayaking! It will make your day even more special and memorable.

Don’t elope and leave. Stay for at least 5-7days. By the time you fly home, you’ve had a wedding, a honeymoon, and a life-changing experience for half the price of a ballroom rental in New York or London.

Useful Tip: The “Duty-Free” Hack

Alcohol in Iceland is taxed by volume and is incredibly expensive. Pro Tip: When you land at KEF airport, go to the Duty-Free shop before you leave the baggage claim. Pick up your champagne, wine, and gin there. You’ll save 50-60% compared to buying it at the state-run liquor stores (Vínbúðin) in town.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Iceland offers a landscape that is as raw as it is beautiful, and your wedding day should be no different. Beyond the permits and the logistics, eloping here is about choosing an experience that reflects your spirit of adventure. By prioritizing what truly matters to you — whether that’s a private helicopter to a remote glacier or a slow morning in a luxury lodge — you aren’t just planning a wedding; you’re crafting a core memory.

Let’s make sure every part of your budget supports the freedom to explore and the time and space to breathe and I will be there to help you navigate the logistics so that when the day arrives, the only thing you have to focus on is each other.
