What You Need to Know About Iceland’s Weather for Your Elopement Day
Iceland’s weather is as wild and unpredictable as its landscapes. You can experience sunshine, rain, strong winds, and even snow—all in the span of an hour. If you’re planning an elopement here, being prepared for anything is key. But don’t worry! The ever-changing weather is what makes Iceland’s scenery so magical, creating stunning and unique photos.
Here’s everything you need to know about Iceland’s weather and how to plan for it on your elopement day.
1. Expect Four Seasons in a Day
Iceland’s weather changes fast. You might wake up to clear skies, get caught in a sudden downpour, and end the day with golden sunlight. Instead of stressing over the forecast, embrace the unpredictability—it makes for epic elopement photos and only adds adventure!
Tip: Always check vedur.is (Iceland’s official weather site) for up-to-date forecasts and road.is for road conditions.
2. Seasonal Weather Guide
Spring (April - May):
Temps: 0°C to 10°C (32°F - 50°F)
Longer daylight hours, melting snow, and fewer tourists.
Weather: Expect cool winds, occasional rain, and a mix of sunny/cloudy days.
Summer (June - August):
Temps: 8°C to 15°C (46°F - 59°F)
Midnight Sun = 24-hour daylight, perfect for late-night golden hour photos!
Weather: Mildest season, but still unpredictable—wind and rain can appear anytime.
Fall (September - October):
Temps: 0°C to 10°C (32°F - 50°F)
Fewer tourists, vibrant autumn colors, and Northern Lights start to appear.
Weather: Crisp air, possible early snowfall, and mixed conditions.
Winter (November - March):
Temps: -10°C to 5°C (14°F - 41°F)
Northern Lights season, frozen waterfalls, and fewer crowds.
Weather: Snowstorms, strong winds, and shorter daylight hours.
Tip: No matter the season, Iceland is usually windy. Be prepared!
3. What to Wear for Your Iceland Elopement
Wedding Attire:
Dress for movement & warmth—flowy dresses look stunning in the wind but should be layered with warm (nude) leggings.
Choose a weather-resistant suit (avoid linen, as it soaks up moisture).
For winter/spring elopements I recommend wearing a white pashmina, cape, bolero, shawl or wrap.
Footwear:
Wear hiking boots instead of fancy heels—trails can be rocky, wet, or muddy.
Waterproof shoes with good grip are a must for Iceland’s terrain.
Layers for Any Weather:
Base Layer: Merino wool or moisture-wicking thermals (avoid cotton).
Outer Layer: Waterproof & windproof jacket to throw over in between taking photos.
Tip: Choose neutral or earthy tones for your elopement outfit to complement Iceland’s natural scenery.
4. How to Handle Wind, Rain & Snow in Photos
Wind:
Flowing dresses, loose hair, and veils can create dramatic, cinematic shots.
Be flexible with your ceremony location—some areas have natural wind barriers.
Rain:
Rain adds a moody, romantic feel to photos—embrace it!
I also usually bring two clear umbrellas (looks better in photos than a solid-colored one).
Snow:
Snowy landscapes make for an ethereal, fairytale-like backdrop.
Be prepared for cold hands and noses—hand warmers are your best friend (don’t worry, I usually have some on me)!
Tip: Some of the most stunning photos come from unexpected weather conditions—don’t be afraid to go with the flow and just have fun with it!
5. Backup Plans & Flexible Timing
Since Iceland’s weather is so unpredictable, having a backup plan is essential.
Location Flexibility:
Choose multiple location options in case of extreme weather.
Some areas (like Reynisfjara Beach) can be dangerous in high winds—I will help you choose a safe alternative.
Timing Flexibility:
Plan your elopement around sunrise or sunset for the best lighting.
Consider splitting your photo sessions into two days to get the best conditions.
Tip: If your original location is too stormy, trust me — I know hidden spots that work in any weather!
Final Thoughts: Embrace Iceland’s Wild Beauty
Iceland’s weather isn’t a challenge—it’s part of the adventure. Whether you're exchanging vows under the golden Midnight Sun, wrapped in mist from a hidden waterfall, or standing against the backdrop of a winter storm, your elopement will be uniquely magical.
