The 3 BEST ICELAND ELOPEMENT LOCATIONS NEAR REYKJAVIK

Looking for the perfect Iceland elopement locations near Reykjavik? I got you.

It is no secret that Iceland is incredibly rich in photogenic locations, here you can find almost any landscape you like from glaciers, waterfalls and snowcapped mountains, to black sand beaches, lava fields and volcanoes. Not many people know, however, that in order to get amazing scenery in your photos you don’t always have to drive far away through the whole island, some stunningly beautiful spots are located right outside the capital city!
Here is my list of 3 best elopement locations near Reykjavik where I love to shoot.

1

Lake Kleifarvatn

A moody volcanic lake with still waters, black volcanic rock formations and vast open views, ideal for couples drawn to dramatic and minimalist landscapes.

  • Volcanic and geothermal scenery
  • Open, cinematic views looking best in moody weather
  • Peaceful and uncrowded

An Atmospheric Lake Surrounded By Lava

Kleifarvatn is one of Iceland’s most atmospheric lakes, located between volcanic hills on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Its vast landscapes, dramatic black sand beaches, and stunning smooth lava rock formations make it an incredible location for intimate elopements that feel wild, quiet, and raw.
Kleifarvatn truly comes alive in overcast, gloomy weather, when low clouds, wind, and changing light enhance the dark volcanic surroundings.

Overcast skies and mist add depth and atmosphere, making this an incredible location for couples drawn to cinematic, emotional Iceland elopement photography. It’s ideal for those who love raw landscapes and aren’t afraid to embrace Iceland’s unpredictable weather for a more powerful, storytelling-focused experience.

2

Þórufoss waterfall

A powerful waterfall set within a rugged river canyon and known as a Game of Thrones filming location, adding a cinematic touch to any elopement.

  • Less crowded than other famous waterfalls
  • Game of Thrones filming location
  • Quick access from the parking lot

A Powerfull Waterfall Straight Out Of A Movie

Þórufoss is a powerful, lesser-visited waterfall that feels raw and breathtaking, making it a stunning backdrop for adventurous elopements. The wide cascade and rugged mountains around it create a cinematic scene, especially when water levels are high. It’s a place that feels dramatic without being crowded, ideal for couples who want something striking yet intimate.

I love shooting there in sunny weather at sunrise or sunset, when soft, directional light adds depth and texture to the waterfall and surrounding landscape. Golden hour enhances the scale and movement of the water, making it an ideal setting for couples planning an adventurous Iceland elopement in a quiet but very impressive location.

3

Secret canyon with a waterfall

A hidden waterfall tucked into a narrow gorge, offering a secluded and almost fairy-tale atmosphere for intimate vows.

  • Secluded and private, no tourists around
  • Best at sunrise or sunset and if there’s no snow
  • Includes a 30 min easy hike

A Hidden Gem With Nobody Around

This secret location is ideal for couples seeking a quiet, intimate elopement in Iceland away from crowds. The secluded canyon and rugged, mossy surroundings create a romantic setting for private vows and emotional moments. The spot is perfect for introverted couples planning a small elopement or adventure wedding, where the focus is on connection, nature, and feeling like they are completely alone in the whole world.

This location is best experienced in sunny weather at sunrise or sunset, when soft, golden light filters into the canyon and highlights the landscape. This location works beautifully for spring, summer, and early autumn elopements, when the ground is clear and accessible. Due to the narrow gorge and terrain, it’s not ideal in winter or snowy conditions, making it a perfect choice for couples planning a warm-season Iceland elopement focused on intimacy, seclusion and a peaceful atmosphere.

I’ve documented over 100 couples’ stories in Iceland and I’ll never tire of it.

I feel most alive being outdoors, flying above erupting volcanoes with my drone or on a tiny plane, hiking across lava fields and colorful mountains, chasing midnight sun and finding hidden gems of Iceland most people will never see. I love discovering quiet, untouched spaces and sharing them with my couples, creating precious moments in nature — the kind that feel surreal, intimate, and bring tears of joy because you are overwhelmed by the beauty you are witnessing. Sharing the journey and connecting with my couples through adventure is probably my favourite part of the job. That’s where the real magic happens — and the photos truly speak for themselves.
